Nonabelian Monopoles and the Vortices that Confine Them
Nonabelian magnetic monopoles of Goddard-Nuyts-Olive-Weinberg type have recently been shown to appear as the dominant infrared degrees of freedom in a class of softly broken N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories in which the gauge group G is broken to various nonabelian subgroups H by an adjoint Higgs VEV. When the low-energy gauge group H is further broken completely by e.g. squark VEVs, the mon...
متن کاملNon-abelian Monopoles, Vortices and Confinement
Three closely related issues will be discussed. Magnetic quarks having non-Abelian charges have been found recently to appear as the dominant infrared degrees of freedom in some vacua of softly broken N = 2 supersymmetric QCD with SU(nc) gauge group. Their condensation upon N = 1 perturbation causes confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking. We argue that these magnetic quarks can be naturall...
متن کاملNon-Abelian vortices and non-Abelian statistics.
We study the interactions of non-abelian vortices in two spatial dimensions. These interactions have novel features, because the Aharonov-Bohm effect enables a pair of vortices to exchange quantum numbers. The cross section for vortex-vortex scattering is typically a multi-valued function of the scattering angle. There can be an exchange contribution to the vortex-vortex scattering amplitude th...
متن کاملAbelian monopoles and center vortices in Yang-Mills plasma
Condensation of the Abelian monopoles and the center vortices leads to confinement of color in low temperature phase of Yang-Mills theory. We stress that these topological magnetic degrees of freedom are also very important in the deconfinement regime: at the point of the deconfinement phase transition both the monopoles and the vortices are released into the thermal vacuum contributing, in par...
متن کاملDyonic Non-Abelian Vortices
We study three-dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theories with and without a Chern-Simons interaction. We find that these theories admit a rich spectrum of vortex solitons carrying both a topological charge and a global flavour charge. We further derive a low-energy description of the vortex dynamics from a gauged linear sigma model on the vortex worldline.
